UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism. It is a unique opportunity to highlight the potential that tourism has for transforming the world into a place of greater prosperity and well-being.
Tourism is the world’s third largest industry, after the oil and chemical industry, and is one of the fastest growing sectors. Tourism has had more than 1.2 billion international arrivals in 2016. Tourism stimulates macro- and local economic growth, creates jobs and business opportunities, helps combat poverty and can form people. With appropriate zoning management and policies, tourism can contribute to equality between people, the protection of the ecosystem and biodiversity, the protection of heritage, and provide solutions to many other global challenges. But tourism can also pose a threat to the climate, cultural values and local residents. Too much tourism can, for example, have a pernicious impact on destinations and can, in the medium term, be self-destructive.
That is why the 8th conference of sustainable tourism 2018 seeks to find ways to protect nature and local culture through the development of new solutions that minimize the adverse effects of tourism. This can be achieved through new strategies involving the active collaboration of society as a whole.
The conference will take place in the picturesque city of Vienna, capital of Austria, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A perfect opportunity to get to know this wonderful city.
